...engaging people with mental illness in a life-giving community of peace, love & hope

About Us

How we care for those with mental illness is a significant and growing crisis in the City of Dallas.  People are being neglected by an underfunded & chaotic mental health system, inadequate treatment & community supports, overburdened case managers, and unregulated & unprincipled boarding home operators.  To compound the problem, by and large, the public, and our churches, remain uninformed about this failure.

Front-page reports about the plight of the mentally ill and the troubles within the system are frequent in The Dallas Morning News.  According to the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, over 90,000 in the county suffer the effects of severe mental illness.  Our jails, emergency rooms, and homeless shelters are carrying a burden they were not set up to address.

In Dallas County, no other faith-based organization focuses exclusively on low-income people living with mental illness.

Whereas, the Well Community began as a simple outreach to residents of north Oak Cliff, over time our vision and scope of ministry has been expanded.  We believe, and others affirm, that we are pursuing an innovative path and developing a powerful prototype of care, recovery, and life-transformation for people living with mental illness.

In the remainder of this section, you will read about the nature of mental illness, a brief overview of our recovery philosophy, and the state of Dallas’ mental health system.  We have provided a snapshot of who we are, what we are trying to accomplish, and how we are going about our mission.  In addition, we have included many valuable documents about mental illness, the Well Community, and press accounts about our work.
